Hair Mesotherapy and PRP in Lisbon

Hair mesotherapy and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) are injectable medical treatments that act directly on the scalp to halt hair loss, improve hair quality and stimulate weakened follicles. At Replace Clinic in Lisbon, every protocol is defined by Dr Fátima Garcês following a trichological assessment.

Clinically reviewed by Dr Fátima Garcês, Clinical Director of Replace Clinic — 20 years dedicated to hair restoration.

Key points

  • Sessions of 30 to 45 minutes, no hospital stay and an immediate return to routine

  • Combined protocols (mesotherapy + PRP) tailored to the type and stage of hair loss

  • 18 months of clinical follow-up with photographic records of progress

What is hair mesotherapy?

Hair mesotherapy involves micro-injections of vitamins, amino acids, trace elements and growth factors delivered directly into the superficial layer of the scalp, where the follicles sit. Delivering nutrients to the exact site avoids the loss of effectiveness seen with oral supplements.

It is indicated above all for diffuse hair loss, fine and weakened hair, telogen effluvium and the early stages of androgenetic alopecia — situations where the follicle is still alive but miniaturised.

What is PRP for hair?

For PRP, we take a small blood sample, spin it to concentrate the platelets, and reinject that plasma into the scalp. The platelets release growth factors that improve blood supply to the follicle and prolong the hair's growth phase.

Because it uses the patient's own biological material, PRP carries no risk of rejection and is often combined with mesotherapy to enhance results.

How treatment works at Replace Clinic

The journey always begins with an assessment appointment — in person at Rua Rodrigues Sampaio in Lisbon, or via video consultation. We examine the scalp and clinical history and, when necessary, request blood tests to rule out systemic causes of hair loss.

  • Trichological assessment and initial clinical photography
  • Application of topical anaesthetic for comfort during the session
  • Micro-injections distributed across the thinning areas
  • Usual protocol: 4 to 6 monthly sessions, followed by maintenance
  • Photographic review at 3, 6 and 12 months

Results you can expect

The first noticeable change is usually a reduction in shedding, between the second and third session. Increased density and improved hair thickness become visible from three to four months onwards, once the new growth cycle is established.

Mesotherapy and PRP do not replace a hair transplant in areas that already have no follicles — in those cases they act as a complement, preserving the native hair around the transplanted area.

Frequently asked questions

Does hair mesotherapy hurt?
Discomfort is mild. We apply a topical anaesthetic before the session and the needles used are very fine, so most patients describe only a brief pricking sensation.
How many PRP sessions are needed?
The usual protocol is 4 to 6 monthly sessions, followed by maintenance sessions every 6 months. The exact number depends on the degree of miniaturisation seen at the initial assessment.
Can I wash my hair after the session?
We recommend waiting 24 hours before washing your hair and avoiding swimming pools, saunas and intense sun exposure for the first 48 hours.
Does hair mesotherapy work for androgenetic alopecia?
It works as long as a living follicle remains. In early and intermediate androgenetic alopecia it helps halt progression and boost density; in areas that are already completely bald, a hair transplant is required.
